Our Origins

One of the first Building Preservation Trusts to operate within Scotland, Cockburn Conservation Trust was incorporated in 1978. It was set up in response to the European Architectural Heritage Year in 1975 and the establishment of the Architectural Heritage Fund.

Its early history is bound to that of the Cockburn Association - Edinburgh's Civic Trust. In 1911 Cockburn Association purchased the 16th century flatted Tenement Moubray House on Edinburgh's High Street. Over the course of the next 60 years the house was maintained and let by the Association, the revenue supplemented by income from the inaugural appeal and was used to create a stand-alone revolving fund Building Preservation Trust.

Since its inception CCT has undertaken 10 major projects in Edinburgh. All of these projects were completed successfully and resulted in the revolving fund being increased over the course of the last two decades. Details of the completed projects and those currently being undertaken may be found in the Past Projects and Current Projects section of this site.

CCT now works within the Alba Conservation Group structure, with all assets and staff held by the Alba Conservation Trust which heads the Group. Through this working arrangement, CCT is able to undertake its own projects selected by the Trust and its Trustees. The structure is shown below:
