Our Origins

ACT was incorporated in 2003 as a company limited by guarantee with charitable status. The Alba Conservation Group was formed in 2004 following a successful working partnership between two building preservation trusts, Cockburn Conservation Trust (CCT), founded 1978, and Scottish Historic Buildings Trust (SHBT), founded 1985. CCT and SHBT have over twenty-five years of experience in historic building preservation, repair and adaptation for re-use projects. The team has developed strong relations with other agencies in the field such as the Architectural Heritage Fund, Association of Preservation Trusts, Heritage Lottery Fund and Historic Scotland. For information about these organisations, and to visit other sites of interest, click here.

The Group structure allows ACT to assist other trusts on an advisory and consultancy basis, while CCT and SHBT continue to work on a variety of projects identified by their boards and suited to their individual characters. ACT offers local groups and other trusts access to its experience by providing specialist advice and guidance at key stages of their projects. The expertise of ACT's staff and board is available to every project regardless of size and nature.
